They say that men make plans and God laughs. Well recently, that has never been a truer saying in my life!
The keto food was packed, beautifully into individual meals (labeled, the works!); every bit of gear, gizmo and gadget was hauled out of storage, dusted off, oiled, polished, weighed and set out on the table in the garage; I have a new sleeping bag (had to sell a kidney for the cost!) complete with liner and new ultralight camping cooker which can fold into a cup!!! We were R-E-A-D-Y! So was Mother Nature…….with other plans.
24 hours before departure, an email let us know that a slip had occurred on the mountain - there had been a lot of rain - blocking off the 5 day trail at day one! For a mere monetary sum (that would have taken care of my other kidney!) a helicopter could deliver us to to our first overnight hut, high in the mountains. As much as I would have LOVED to do this, financial sense prevailed and we decided that a postponement was the smartest (least fun) thing to do. But…that didn’t stop our trip in other ways!
The “Old Ghost Trail Trip” was quickly dubbed the “Wing-It Trip” and we sprang into action to rescue the whole thing. The Hiking trip became the Road trip and despite our initial disappointment we were determined to enjoy the time away - much needed after a very challenging year.
The South Island of New Zealand is an incredible area - vast open plains, snowy capped mountains and the ocean all around. We did get to hike some distance into the first day of the Old Ghost Trail and also from the other end - what would have been day five. Lush forests and beautiful mountain fed streams greeted us as we made our way along the fabulously maintained trail - soothing my disappointed heart with the promise of next time! What I do know for sure, is that all the planning is done - buckets of thanks to my ultra organized hiking companions! (Check out the military precision notes below!) Roll on February 2026 - I am ready for you!!!
